Floating houses!

Dominicus Björkstam, an architect in Ekenäs, wrote on his blog that he and Guy Design have worked together on a floating house project for many years. Now one of their Etcet house prototypes is probably going to be built in a temporary place in Helsinki!

Temporary Etcet houses

I think it is a very exciting project since there are many waterfront areas in Finland. Well and carefully designed floating houses could be a great way to use waterfront space and give more people access to the waterfront. Hopefully we can enjoy cafés and some real public floating spaces too – why not libraries, museums, other public spaces….

Inhabitat.com which is (a weblog devoted to the future of design, tracking the innovations in technology, practices and materials that are pushing architecture and home design towards a smarter and more sustainable future) has a whole section about exciting floating houses projects.

These floating buildings do not have to be very expensive to build and buy. There are some affordable modest, energy efficient two-bedroom homes planned in Edinburgh which will utilize solar power and sell for significantly less than homes of an equivalent size in the Scottish capital. The fact that no land needs to be purchased helps to keep down the costs of the homes.
